Beach Vacation Packing List: Sun, Sand, and No Forgotten Sunscreen

A beach vacation is mostly relaxing, until you arrive and realise the sunscreen, the beach towel, or the after-sun is sitting at home. Sun and sand do not forgive forgotten items the way a city break does. This list covers the beach essentials, the sun protection, and the small things that are easy to miss.

Beach day essentials

Start with what you actually use on the sand. These are the items worth packing first, because most of them are hard or expensive to replace once you are at a resort.

• Swimwear: two sets so one can dry while you wear the other.
• Sun protection: high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, after-sun, a hat, sunglasses.
• Beach gear: quick-dry towel, flip-flops or sandals, a tote for sand-proof carrying.
• In the water: snorkel or goggles, a dry bag for your phone.
• Cover-up and a light layer for sea breeze in the evening.

Clothing for sun and evenings

Days are easy, light and breathable. Evenings are where people underpack. Coastal nights cool down, and most beach spots have at least one dinner that calls for something a step up from a swimsuit and a cover-up.

• Light tops and shorts or dresses for daytime, one per day.
• One smart-casual outfit for dinners out.
• A light sweater or shirt for cooler evenings.
• Underwear and socks per day, plus comfortable walking shoes.
